I know why there are flowers
I know why there are flowers
in this world of storm and snows;
why this drear earth of ours
can bear the perfect rose.
We try, dear Lady, vainly,
thy beauty to express,
but words cannot encompass
thy perfect loveliness.
But when men and angels falter,
God has spoken; and we see
in this rose upon thy altar
the perfect praise of thee.
